Do something totally different and tick off an item from your bucket list, Climb / Trek up the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro!
Mount Kilimanjaro is in the Country of Tanzania, close to the borders of Kenya.
The summit is 5,895m above sea level (almost 6km high). Whilst trekking up this breathtaking snow-capped mountain you will pass through 5 distinct climatic zones.
These zones from the base to the summit are: Bushland, Rainforest, Moorland, Alpine Desert and Arctic Zone – basically hot and wet at the bottom to bloody freezing at the top.
Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) is the nearest airport to fly into, the transfer to base camp is just an hour journey from the airport. DesignaVenture’s package includes flights from the UK, via Amsterdam. It is possible to fly direct with BA into Nairobi Airport (NBO), however the airport transfer is 4 – 6 hours due the infrastructure.
As a private group you can do the trek at any time of year, however the best times to do the trek are January to March, June to October and December.
Kilimanjaro is one of the only mountains where you do not have to physically climb, you will have to scramble and pull yourself over some bits, but the main of the Expedition is a trek, so you can cancel that mountaineering course you’ve just booked on!
There are many routes to the Kilimanjaro summit, we have chosen the Machame route which has the biggest success rate. Yes, success rate, whilst 95% of all people get to the summit on the Machame Route there is a 5% chance you may not make it, but then it wouldn’t be a challenge with a 100% success rate would it?
The 7-day Machame Route approaches the mountain via the Southwest, taking in stunning views across the Shira Plateau.
One of the reasons the Machame Route has the highest success rate is due to the “walk high, sleep low” theory and as a result helps all climbers acclimatize quickly to the altitude.
Although this is a Whisky free trek the route has been nicknamed ‘The Whisky route’?!
DesignaVenture provide you with a clear itinerary showing the distances you walk each day including altitude and sleeping arrangements.
Many climbers schedule their expedition to reach the summit when there is a full moon. The full moon lights up the stunning glaziers giving you a bonus to an already superb experience. To check full moon dates gives us a call.
