Ah Cheltenham…or ‘Made in Chelters’ as some of us at Team Designa like to call it. Cheltenham is a teeny bit posh you see. It’s less the ‘The Only Way Is Gloucester move-over-Arg & Lyd’ and more “I could be Spencer Matthews and his latest squeeze’ or ‘was that Hugh Grant with his?’ or even ‘sweetie look at Judy Dench in that bookshop’ with its Regency houses, smart railings and bare floorboards-meets-vintage champagne chic; Look, historically Gloucester had the docks – Cheltenham had the spas, get it?
Despite having lost its healing spa town status many moons ago (though the Pittville Pump Room still homes the waters), Cheltenham has maintained its knack to attract with designer shopping and an elegant central promenade. The town centre has plenty of great eateries, excellent retail therapy mixing nationals with independents and an eye for the unusual.
On the edge but within walking distance of the centre, the cool crowd will graze in and out of the Montpellier area’s wine bars and independent fashion merchants, delis and high class dinner dens. Oh yes, YOU ARE the cool crowd!
Potter around the side streets of The Suffolks and Tivoli, discovering antiques and random little businesses that make it worth the hunt.
Blag it with the bookies and play ‘spot the celebrity’ at the famous racecourse, which hosts its renowned Gold Cup, or the annual acclaimed Literary Festival might call for some trendy specs to pull up into your oh-so-styled barnet.
At night the lights dim but the chandeliers still sparkle as the basement clubs and bars come to life and the pace revs a little. Basically Cheltenham has a perky panache and a great vibe and buzz, plus plenty going on for peeps that like to live it up in style without the London price tag.
