We see your quizzical eyebrow is raised; curling, you say? Is this something a little camp involving hair appliances? Or did you immediately think of that high profile, elegant (?), bizarre Olympic ice sport?
If you did, we don't know whether to congratulate you, or tell you that you need help. But actually, you are spot on for what is, in fact, a brilliantly funny, surprisingly skillful and certainly original activity that we guarantee you'll never forget.
Big in America and Canada, our locations are those perennial eastern European cold spots, Bratislava, Prague and Riga. What's curling all about? Well, it's related to bowls, boules and shuffleboard. You slip and slide your way on to the ice rink, or ‘curling track' and the idea is to glide your special ‘stone' as close to a target as possible. Sounds simple doesn't it, but you're not allowed to touch it once you've propelled it initially, and you steer and control its speed by vigorously ‘sweeping' the stone's path with a ‘broom'.
It just sounds bonkers doesn't it, yet yes, this really is an official sport? Your professional instructors will guide you on the techniques and technicalities, but something tells us you're going to get well and truly ‘stoned'. You'll certainly be very competitive and it's an excellent team sport.
Who knew, curling here we come!
