A Watford man staying at the Rock Hotel in Gibraltar on his Stag Do woke up to a monkey rummaging through his bag looking for food.

Leigh Hayes was on a stag do sailing trip and had only been in bed for 2 hours after a heavy night of celebrating when him and his roommate woke up to banging noises in their room.

He told the Gibraltar Chronicle “There was lots of banging about in our room.

We’d had a few beers so it took us a while to wake up but to our amazement, there was a monkey sitting on the table eating a biscuit.”

He said the Barbary Macaque monkey, had also taken an apple and three oranges after going through their bags, and throughout the stag weekend the monkey returned to their room, even opening their window.

“He almost became part of our stag group” Leigh added. “It was a very funny experience, something that won’t be forgotten.”

“The bit that made us laugh is the monkey could get the wrapper off the lollies quicker than any of us lads on the stag weekend.”

Managers at both The Rock and the Caleta Hotel have urged the authorities to intervene because monkeys have turned the hotels into their playground. And although some visitors take delight in close contact with the Barbary Macaques, they intimidate most others. Some tourists have been bitten.
