Fancy Dress, a short history of dressing up

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

These days 50% of Stag dos from the UK like to dress up on one of the nights of their stag weekend.

When I say dress up, I don’t mean sticking on a smart suit or wearing black tie, I mean on one of their stag nights all the group dress up and go out as the 118 men, Olympic athletes or even go as far as Mankini’s, sported by infamous Borat.

So, why do so many stag parties like to get dressed up?

One of the main reasons I think stag groups dress up in Fancy Dress, is to stick out in the crowd and to be noticed. You will also be able to spot your stag group members in a busy bar or club.

I also think it’s a good leveller, a great talking point and gives everyone in the group a connection, as some stag group members maybe meeting for the first time.

Where did fancy dress come from?

It may have started in the 18th century at the mask balls, but the modern concept started by the Victorians and expanded upon by the Edwardians.

In the 1940’s costume parties were the rage until the 1970’s when fancy dress really took off but none of these really match up to what is going on in today’s standards, were everything and anything goes.

The 80’s look, Vicars and Tarts, 118 men, The flintstones and even going our dressed as Fruit and Veg, with more and more whacky ideas coming out of the woodwork each year this is the age of Fancy Dress, no matter what you are celebrating.

Monday, January 24th, 2011

The tabloids are speculating that Prince William will be having two stag dos before he marries Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey on April 29.

The first stag do is expected to be held in London and will be for all his old university chums, friends of the family, old acquaintances and school friends.

The Mirror reports that for his second stag do, William and a select hand full of guests will head off to Cape Town, South Africa, for an evening party organised by Williams best friends, Guy Pelly and Tom Inskip, is believed to be happening at the end of March at the raunchy Vaudeville Burlesque Club, known to all as The V Spot, the place to go to and to be seen when in Cape Town!

This 300-seater burlesque supper club is meant to be scintillating thrill from start to finish, delighting patrons nightly with a fantastic combination of 16 act cirque show including singers, hula-hoop fire dancers, tap dancers, acrobatic, drag acts etc, enjoyed over a 3-course supper lovingly created by DISH Food & Social

The V Spot is opulently decked Like a gaudy world of fantasy is entered through plush velvet curtains and has white fluffy clouds and birdcages hanging from the ceiling, and a dance floor boasting a number of strategically placed poles. Entry is only £3.80 however the drinks served by busty corset-wearing chorus girls are unbelievably expensive with a bottle of Moet rose champagne setting you back a mere £480!

The Busiest Hen and Stag Weekend of the year

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

If you are planning a hen weekend or stag do on the 29th April weekend you better move fast as this weekend is filling everywhere.

The Royals get married on the 29th April and this is being classed as a bank holiday, which is a Friday.

You will also then have Monday the 02nd May as another bank holiday so this weekend is possibly the most desirable weekends to celebrate your last weekend of freedom of the year.

“We have noticed this to be very busy weekend with our popular stag locations of Bristol and Bournemouth to be filling fast” a spokesman from Designaventure has advised me.

So I recommend if you are looking to go on your stag do or hen party on that weekend you better book now.

Kate Middleton’s Chelsea Hen

Monday, January 17th, 2011

There has been lots of chitchat about where Prince William will hold his stag do but hardly any murmurs on where Kate Middleton is planning to hold her hen party, until now.

The Mail on line team has reported that Kate will have her hen night bash at the swanky recently opened The bar at 86, on London’s Fulham Road after enjoying celebrating her 29th Birthday there with her friends last week.

A friend of the Princess-to-be told reporters referring to Bar 86, “she loves it because the staff are discreet and she knows the owner”.

Kate needs to add some activities to the proceedings like a bollywood or burlesque dancing class (very current), creating fascinators, decorating cupcakes or dare I say a pole-dancing lesson!

A Stag Do in North Wales, Why?

Friday, January 14th, 2011

Why have a stag do in North Wales when you have Barcelona, Prague and Bournemouth all within easy reach?

Well first of all it may not have the weather but boy does it have the stag do activities.

The White Water Rafting sites are by far the busiest within the UK, and you can expect White Water all year round.

The quad biking sites take in fantastic scenery and give you some of the most exciting treks you will ever experience, with one climbing a mountain to views of seven Counties!

Gorge Scrambling also known as Canyoning is what an outdoor activity should be; exciting, hair raising, group bonding and all with stunning views.

On the North Wales / Shropshire borders you have Clay Pigeon Shooting, Hovercrafting, Karting, Paintball and archery to name but a few.

One thing I haven’t mentioned is that feeling of getting away from it all, one of the major North Wales stag selling points.

Stag do ideas with a twist for London

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

Coming up with some stag do ideas for London can always be a bit of a maze, so much to do in so little time.

You have the usual suspects such as paintball, karts and quads, but what about something a little different?

Well for starters how about paintball with a little twist, SAS style close quarter combat all indoors in the centre of London.

Rickshaws are a brilliant way to have a whistle stop tour of the city, how about a having a bar crawl or cocktail tour of the West End, by pedal power great for the environment and don’t have to pedal! Picture it your stag party in convoy going to the hippest cocktail bars or best traditional pubs.

Most of you enjoy a bit of lap dancing on a stag do but how about going to one of the most infamous lap-dancing clubs in the world, Stringfellows. You might meet the man himself, one thing for sure you will certainly see some hot totty and if it’s good enough for Russell Brand!

Strip James Naked

Friday, January 7th, 2011

Over the years there have been many stag do pranks and stag do ideas that would make the hair on the back of your neck take root and run.

Mat Horne who plays Gavin in Gavin and Stacey has told reporters that he plans to strip his mate James Corden naked and sell his pants and trainers!

We wonder if Mat will be asked to be the Best Man to the Gavin and Stacey writer?

Mat also told reporters at Cirque du Soleil’s Totem premiere “I want to strip him naked and tie him up, but he’ll probably do that himself”.

“I’d like to steal all his trainers and set fire to them, just to see his little face” he added.

With all these ideas flooding in I think James Corden needs to rethink his 4 week stag do idea.

A Four Week Stag Do for James Corden

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

Funny man James Corden has told pals to take 4 weeks off for his stag do!

We feel this will be one crazy stag party, with plenty of clubs and bars in London taking a pounding and that’s before he jets off with his stag do pals.

According to the tabloids James proposed to his pregnant girlfriend Julia Carey on Christmas day, currently the pair are on a romantic holiday in the Maldives while a mate house sits.

Julia is a charity worker and they have been dating for nearly a year.

James is currently one of the funniest men on television and was recently a DJ on Radio 1.

He co-wrote BAFTA Award winning comedy Gavin and Stacey amongst other great TV programmes.

We wish him all the luck in the world and if he needs advice to look no further.
