Responsibilities Of Best Man
First of all the all important Stag Do demands a lot of
time and effort, booking through a Stag Tour operator such as Designaventure.co.uk
will save you that time and effort. Remember if you do decide to book
everything by yourself make sure you let every location such as hotels,
nightclubs, activity sites etc. know that you are a "stag Do"
they then cannot turn you away for that reason. With that said, there is
still the much hyped 'speech' to be written. This needn't be the usual
tribulation, which various scaremongers' make it out to be. Try and enjoy
it as after when relieving the memory you will wish you did.
We at stag-weekend.net have put together the following points on best man
speeches, in order to help you a little and hopefully remind you of a few
pointers:
- Don't try to hard to be comical (unless you can pull it off).
~ The best man's speech is meant to be sincere and considerate (as you
are the best friend of the groom). It is also meant to cover 3 - 4
funny stories, of the groom's younger years and the happy days of when
he met his wife. Also, don't forget to include positive achievements
that the Groom has done, such as a degree, sporting medals or charity
work. They have spent a lot of time and money on their wedding so a
four-worded speech is defiantly not appropriate.
- Time Keeping ~ In estimation, 5 - 7 minutes should be the
longest you keep anyone from the bar. 5 - 7 minutes is a long time so
give yourself plenty of gaps where you think people may laugh, clap or
cry!
- Be outspoken ~ If you think the Groom is crap at football and
he thinks he's good tell the audience, be honest, they'll want to
know.
- Have it honorable ~ In your funny stories, there is no
necessity to go into aspects of the Groom's private life as a rent
boy. Although this would sound funny amongst his friends in the pub,
however when you're in front of the Groom's own family and his new in
laws remember, they may not be interested (in some cases they may, so
try and judge the audience before you write your speech). Also, try
not to swear some guests may take offence and don't get drunk before
as this definitely does not work!
- Don't ignore tradition ~ The Groom will thank you for being
best man, so you will need to thank him back, the Groom will also
toast to the Bridesmaids, you will then have to thank him on behalf of
the bridesmaids. Your final steps are to include your speech, the
reading of telexes/emails/cards from absent friends and a final toast
to the Bride & Groom.
Here are a couple one liners you may want to use in
your speech:
As you can tell I am feeling a bit nervous, but it's
OK, I have spoken to a lot of friends, and they advised me it's all about
delivery, mind you I have been hanging around with a lot of midwives
recently.
Women you can't live with them, you can't live with them.
You know what? I haven't spoken to my wife for two years, we haven't
fallen out, I just didn't want to interrupt!
Jonny (Groom) in closing I would like to offer you this advice, my old man
use to say to me "always fight fire with fire", and that is why,
he no longer works for the fire brigade!
