Timing your visit
Riga is an all-year destination. During the summer the nearby white-sand beaches are packed with sun-worshipers. Tourists and locals alike sit out all night in the city’s beer tents, play beach football and club till dawn. Whilst during the height of winter Riga resembles the scene on a traditional Christmas card with its cobbled streets, church spires and medieval buildings wrapped in a blanket of pristine snow. During the winter months the more adventurous start the day off with a bobsleigh ride before hitting the warmth of the pubs.
Accommodation
Riga has a vast amount of hotels on offer. The most popular hotels that we offer are of a 3 star standard, conveniently located within walking distance of the sights and nightlife and include breakfast for a comfortable stay offering excellent value for money. We can also arrange posh hostels and 4 star hotels.
Restaurants
Latvian cuisine isn't famous, and probably never will be, typical Latvian food includes pork, potatoes and cabbage in abundant measures. Latvians also have their own version of the ubiquitous East European dumpling, called 'piragi'. Don’t panic there are loads of restaurant options so you can still find everything from a thin-crust pizza to fresh sushi, take your pick!
Remember there is no such thing as a free lunch - Beware of the Riga Con
Be wary of tourist traps posing as strip clubs. The nature of the con is very simple ~ you are not paying for drinks, dances etc. up front, instead everything goes onto a bill, which is often hundreds of pounds per person. Top tip: Avoid strip clubs with doorman ~ their job is only to beat money out of the client. Genuine clubs in Riga do not have them. Always insist on paying for everything upfront or as your go. If a club hesitates or tries to persuade you to put everything on a bill ~ walk away!
With that being said, the police are aware of the few incidents of cheating tourists in dodgy clubs and have formed a dedicated tourist police team. Police vans patrolling the old town to look after the you, they wear a union jack badges to indicate that they are English speaking.
